Hank Williams first day cover

28 November 2010

Store date: 9 June 1993

I had a small pile of these at one time, about five of them, I think.  Being a stamp collector since I was a young boy, I responded immediately to this first day cover because of the engraving on the left side of the envelope.  It’s really easy to get a first day cover if all you desire is the stamp and postmark, but engravings on the cover are a bit tougher to round up.  My guess is that these came via Mercury Records or Polygram Distribution, who were responsible for getting Hank’s music out to stores.  That the first day of issue of this Hank Sr. postage stamp and Nashville’s Fan Fair were at the same time could (or could not) have been a coincidence.  Somebody knows.

The actual size of this first day cover is 6½ inches wide by 3½ inches high.

Interestingly, the postage rate of 29¢ in 1993 compared to the 44¢ rate in 2010 reveals a 15¢ increase in 17 years.  That’s a 0.88¢ increase in the first class letter mailing rate per year.  I’m just throwing that out there.
