Taylor Hicks signing (video waivers)

3 January 2011

Store date: 10 March 2007

In preparation for the Taylor Hicks in-store on 10 March 2007, the Sony representatives put together the statement pictured above. There were many copies of it – printed in a bold red typeface and laminated in plastic – peppered around the store, most heavily along the outer walls of the shop where the fans were lined up to get their 17.9 seconds of face time with their Idol. The language was heavy in legal-ese. I particularly like this part:

YOUR ENTRANCE TO THESE PREMISES WILL CONSTITUTE YOUR CONSENT AND GRANT OF RIGHTS TO THE PRODUCERS (AND THEIR ASSIGNEES) TO USE AND EXPLOIT YOUR LIKENESS AND IMAGE IN ANY AND ALL MEDIA…

“Exploit your likeness.” In a nutshell.

Before one of the reps pulled these placards out of some hidden place, we had already decided to warn the visitors that there would be lots of photography going on. I went ahead and made a quick sign of my own – much more to the point and with a slightly paternal edge.

Obviously, we were coming from two very different points of view.

  1. Fred, I like your signage much better. Apparently the Sony reps were born without a sense of humor. 😉

Funny thing, I didn’t notice any of the signs, but I did see cameras. Ha!

17.9 seconds? Who timed it? hahaha
