Martin Sexton in-store recording_RESIZED

Martin Sexton was an artist we admired for years before he was persuaded to perform an in-store at Laser’s Edge. It was a quick visit and an aptly store-sized set. The turnout was tiny but respectable (maybe thirty people), and Martin was quite the gentleman.

I found out after the date that a visitor from out of town who was ushering Martin’s Zydeco club show that night had recorded the in-store. He transferred the recording to CD for me, and it was passed hand-to-hand via a mutual friend. Below is one of the four songs that Martin sang for us: “Where Did I Go Wrong With You?” Martin faked everyone out at the end with the promise of a high-note finish.

Notice the “Z” in “Lazer,” which 27 percent of the population does instinctively, I have learned.
